The Stellar Mass-accretion Rate Relation in T Tauri Stars and Brown Dwarfs
نویسندگان
چکیده
Recent observations show a strong correlation between stellar mass and accretion rate in young stellar and sub-stellar objects, with the scaling Ṁacc ∝ M 2 ∗ holding over more than four orders of magnitude in accretion rate. We explore the consequences of this correlation in the context of disk evolution models. We note that such a correlation is not expected to arise from variations in disk angular momentum transport efficiency with stellar mass, and suggest that it may reflect a systematic trend in disk initial conditions. In this case we find that brown dwarf disks initially have rather larger radii than those around more massive objects. By considering disk evolution, and invoking a simple parametrization for a shut-off in accretion at the end of the disk lifetime, we show that such models predict that the scatter in the stellar mass-accretion rate relationship should increase with increasing stellar mass, in rough agreement with current observations. Context. Mass accretion rate determinations are fundamental for an understanding of the evolution of pre-main sequence star circumstellar disks. Aims. Magnetospheric accretion models are used to derive values of the mass accretion rates in objects of very different properties, from brown dwarfs to intermediate-mass stars; we test the validity of these models in the brown dwarf regime, where the...
متن کاملVery Low Mass Stars and Brown Dwarfs in Taurus-Auriga
We present high resolution optical spectra obtained with the HIRES spectrograph on the W. M. Keck I telescope of seven low mass T Tauri stars and brown dwarfs (LMTTs) in Taurus-Auriga. The observed Li I 6708 Å absorption, low surface gravity signatures, and radial velocities confirm that all are members of the Taurus star forming region; no new spectroscopic binaries are identified. Four of the...
متن کاملEvidence for a T Tauri Phase in Young Brown Dwarfs
As part of a multi-faceted program to investigate the origin and early evolution of sub-stellar objects, we present high-resolution Keck optical spectra of 14 very low mass sources in the IC 348 young cluster and the Taurus star-forming cloud. All of our targets, which span a range of spectral types from M5 to M8, exhibit moderate to very strong Hα emission. In half of the IC 348 objects, the H...

Using the largest high-resolution spectroscopic sample to date of young, very low mass stars and brown dwarfs, we investigate disk accretion in objects ranging from just above the hydrogen-burning limit all the way to nearly planetary masses. Our 82 targets span spectral types from M5 to M9.5, or masses from 0.15 M⊙ down to about 15 Jupiters. They are confirmed members of the ρ Ophiuchus, Tauru...
متن کاملLooking for outflows from brown dwarfs
First evidences of IR excess and disk mass accretion (strong Hα emission) around brown dwarfs seem to indicate the existence of circumstellar disks around these sub-stellar objects. Nothing is known at the present time about outflows which potentially might be launched from brown dwarfs, although jets are typically associated with the accretion in standard T Tauri star disks. In this paper we c...
